Carterville sits between Marion and Carbondale.

Most of the town is houses, and a lot of them are newer than what you find in Herrin.

From Marion it is about 14 minutes by IL 37, IL 13 and then South Division Street.

Division Street is the downtown strip. Crab Orchard Lake is about 3 miles away.

Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is about 6 miles out.

Both are near town, not in it. If you live out that way, say so when you call.

Going by the census, Carterville has the newest housing on our list.

The median home was built in 1986.

About three of every four units are single-family and detached.

Around six in ten are owner-occupied.

Carterville yards

Yards from the 1980s onward are younger, and many are still filling in.

Aeration and fall overseeding help turf get thick.

Tall fescue is the usual grass here because it handles heat.

Mowing season starts when the grass does. We mow, trim and blow the clippings off the walks.

We also do spring and fall cleanups, fertilizing and snow removal.

Clay-rich subsoil holds water in spring, so wet lawns need patience.

Fall is the time to aerate and overseed, and new seed needs about two weeks of moisture.

Washing in Carterville

Newer vinyl siding greens up on the shady side like any other siding.

On a young house the streaks stand out more.

Roofs get dark streaks from algae, and gutters collect leaves and seeds.

Patios, driveways and walkways turn dark and slick with algae.

A surface cleaner brings concrete back to its color.

Decks get gentler treatment, and we tell you what we will do before we start.

Planting is a late summer job, so call before the first freeze is close.

A plot put in once firearm season is days away is late.

Tell us the size and what you want growing, and a photo of the ground helps.
